Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook

Acer Aspire S3 ($ 899.99 direct) is the first book in ultra-PCMag Labs, the first of many in the coming months. If this fragment of a laptop is the shape of things to come, keep us excited.
This new generation of laptop to check all the boxes are designed for ultra-book category Intel, the ultra-thin, ultra-fast and ultra-low-cost, more than 5 hours of battery life. Compared to similar laptops and some ultra-Books, we spent time with, like the UX31 Asus Zenbook ($ 1,099 direct) and Lenovo IdeaPad U300s (1199 dollars directly) (stay tuned for our review of both), falls short a couple of features, but it gives you a thin, portable mobile premium compared to competitors.

If you’re already familiar with Windows 7, and would like some continuity in your choice of tablet, then the Acer Iconia is the only feasible choice on the market today. But aside from the fact that it runs on the Windows operating system, is this really the tablet you should spend your hard earned cash on?

Acer Aspire Ethos 8943G

Fast Facts

A large silver sliver, the Acer has an excellent screen and a smooth, milled metal shell. Main processing duties are handled by a quad core CPU that's hooked up to a huge 16GB of RAM.

Mighty or mousey?

It's quite slim but the Acer is too heavy to lug about, which is a pity as the battery life is good for the size. There are loads of cool details like the glassy mouse pad and hidden volume control, but you can get a laptop with a more powerful graphics chip for less.

Stuff says

Classy design, but the performance doesn't quite justify the price.
